About

Hello fellow millennials and welcome to The Millennial Scientist! As a young person of our generation, I found that society often falsely stigmatizes us as a group of lazy couch potatoes who don’t buy houses and who still live in our parents’ basements obsessing over social media and avocado toast. While any one of these may hold true (avocados will always be delicious, and who can afford a house?!), I’ve found that we are actually well educated, bright and progressive individuals who care about our environment, both in the societal sense and the planet.

In our current climate *pun intended*, more and more of us have a desire to understand climate science so that we can make more informed decisions regarding our future. However, many of us may not have the scientific background or education to support it. Hence the idea for “The Millennial Scientist” was born. It is my goal to bring you the hard facts and science, behind many of Earth’s natural phenomena, climate science, weather data and more, in an easy to understand way. It is my hope you will come away from this blog with a deeper understanding of our planet and the processes that drive it so you can share with others. Whether you’re discussing the major powder dump the next El Nino will bring to Lake Tahoe, or the rapidly intensifying hurricanes, The Millennial Scientist is here to bring you the no nonsense science behind it all.

My name is Kim Frauhammer and I am a meteorologist and climate scientist who recently moved to the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado. A recovering Oklahoman but originally hailing from the great state of Michigan, I graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S.E. in Climate and Meteorology, with a minor in German, and again a year later with my M.S. in Atmospheric and Climate Science (Go Blue!). My research focused on the seasonality of nuisance flooding events with respect to tides and sea level rise on the southeast coast of the United States, and communicating risk and uncertainty to the general public. I am an avid skier, tornado chaser, and dog enthusiast, who loves to travel and eat carbs. I hope you find the information here helpful and interesting, and more importantly come away with something you didn’t know before.
